Frigid, pummeling Arctic winds greeted Teeth of the Hydra. Even though they hail from Columbus, Ohio, their most recent release, Greenland, is a furious doom metal shellacking about nature’s wrath, savage Viking survival methods and other aspects of Arctic Circle life.

Guitarist/lead singer Matt Miner‘s demeanor is a cross between The Predator and a Neanderthal with sooty vocal chords, large simian fingers and veins in his forearms about to pop. A brutish rhythm section supports Miner, the cumbersome Rickenbacker bass lines of Matt Bailey hammering drummer Jamie Stillman‘s crumbling infrastructure. Stillman plays skins for Teeth of the Hydra when he’s not trekking across the nation as The Black Keys‘ North American road manager.

During the symphonic cacophony of “Our Strange Men,” Miner’s head banging and whipping rope strength dreadlocks inspired some drink spilling slam dancing as the trio rocked out so hard that they toppled their amp stacks. The roaring applause soared in decibels along with the feedback. The eight-minute riff blizzard “Nine Heads” proved to be a crowd favorite as did the panic inducing “Eruptin’,” where Miner’s guitar revved like the Hemi engine of a 1970’s Plymouth Superbird.

Teeth of the Hydra are at the forefront of a spellbinding new movement in metal with a wholly original sound that slams the listener like an avalanche. They could be the abominable snowman’s favorite band with their stoner rock fusion of shivering, sludgy, and blackened doom metal that stings more than a case of frostbite. Like the mythical Hydra, this trio contains many heads representing a vivid variety of loud musical influences sure to bite you.
