Tedeschi Trucks Band Welcomes DeShawn Alexander & Adam Minkoff At Beacon Theatre

The Tedeschi Trucks Band played the penultimate show of their 2019 Beacon Theatre residency in New York City on Friday night. Once again, the group opened the second set with an acoustic interlude and brought out keyboardist DeShawn Alexander and guitarist Adam Minkoff for a medley of Sly & The Family Stone covers that ended the night.
Last night’s concert featured a first set with a handful of rarities. The TTB kicked off the frame with their first “All That I Need” since February and later played “Until You Remember” for only the third time in 2019 before busting out “Simple Things” and “Learn How To Love” for their 2019 debuts. A cover of Little Milton’s “More & More” closed out the set.

Guitarists Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi went acoustic for a five-song string that opened the second set. Up first was “Strengthen What Remains” from the group’s 2019 album, Signs. The biggest surprise of the night came next as the Tedeschi Trucks Band dusted off their rendition of the blues classic “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed & Burning” for the first time since 2015. It was then back to Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs for “I Am Yours.” More rarities ended the acoustic portion of the night as “Dome Somebody Wrong” saw action for the first time since last year’s residency and “It Hurts Me Too” was revived after three years on the shelf.
The 12-piece band returned to the electric format for a cover of Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters.” Trucks connected the tune with “Bound For Glory” by performing an instrumental rendition of “Amazing Grace.” It was then back to Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs for “Keep On Growing” before the TTB ended the set with the pairing of “I Pity The Fool” and “I Want More.” Last night’s encore of Sly classics “Sing A Simple Song” and “I Want To Take You Higher” featured former Marcus King Band member DeShawn Alexander guesting on keyboards and Adam Minkoff (Dweezil Zappa, Doyle Bramhall II, Amy Helm) on guitar. The Tedeschi Trucks Band closes the residency on Saturday night. A live stream is available via nugs.tv.
