Just ahead of the band’s first U.S. shows in three years, Kevin Parker brought Tame Impala to NPR headquarters for a Tiny Desk Concert. Parker and company offered songs from Tame Impala’s new album, Deadbeat, which dropped today, and more.
Deadbeat is Tame Impala’s first full-length album in over five years since the release of The Slow Rush in February 2020. For their Tiny Desk, the Tame Impala live band — Dominic Simper (guitar), Jay Watson (guitar), James Ireland (ukulele, percussion), Julien Barbagallo (percussion) and Cameron Avery (bass) — went fully acoustic.
On the stripped-down performance, NPR noted: “From a production standpoint, it feels like Tame Impala has done everything but this.” The band opened the Tiny Desk with The Slow Rush cut “Borderline.”
Parker then got into material from Deadbeat, offering outstanding acoustic arrangements of the funky “Loser” and the ravey “Dracula.” Tame Impala wrapped things up with “New Person, Same Old Mistakes,” from the 2015 LP Currents.
