The Tallest Man on Earth (Swedish musician Kristian Matsson) will release a new studio album entitled Henry St. via ANTI- on April 14. Matsson previewed the project’s first new album of original material in four years by unveiling its lead single, “Every Little Heart,” and announced a run of spring tour dates at intimate U.S. venues.

After looking inwards on 2015’s Dark Bird Is Home and 2019’s I Love You, It’s A Fever Dream, Matsson changed course for the 11-track effort and recruited his musical friends for the first The Tallest Man On Earth album performed in a band setting. “My entire career I’ve been a DIY person, mostly fueled by the feeling that I didn’t know what I was doing, so I’d just do everything myself,” Matsson explained regarding his previous way of recording.

Produced by Sylvan Esso‘s Nick Sanborn, Henry St. finds Matsson on guitar and vocals joined by Ryan Gustafson (guitar, lap steel, ukulele), TJ Maiani (drums), CJ Camerieri of Bon Iver (trumpet, French horn), Phil Cook (piano, organ), Rob Moose of Bon Iver, yMusic (strings) and Adam Schatz (saxophone). The upcoming record is the sixth full-length The Tallest Man On Earth album.

Henry St. is the most playful, most me album yet, because it covers so many of the different noises in my head,” added Matsson about an album featuring material written after spending time isolated on a farm in Sweden during the peak of the pandemic. “When you overthink things, you get further away from your original ideas. And God knows I overthink things when I’m by myself.”

The period locked down gave him a new perspective on his craft. “Having been away from it taught me that making music and performing is what I’m doing for the rest of my life, and I’m so grateful for it. It has given me new confidence and playfulness. This is what I do. It’s unconditional.”

The Tallest Man On Earth’s brief spring tour of the U.S. begins with two nights at Hollywood Forever Cemetery Masonic Lodge in Los Angeles on March 22 and 23. Matsson then shares the bill with Elephant Revival at Denver’s Mission Ballroom on March 25 before returning to small venues for shows in Fort Collins (Colorado), San Francisco, Pioneertown (California) and New York City. A full slate of dates in Europe and the UK follows.

“Every Little Heart” displays the sense of fearlessness and self assurance Matsson felt after spending nearly two years playing his guitar and singing in a near silent setting. “But of course I still have little demons inside of me. I wrote some key changes in the song that came natural to me, but I worried they might sound unnatural to others. When TJ Maiani heard it, he straightaway went into this drumbeat that shocked me a little at first, but came completely natural to him. It fit the song perfectly,” noted the Swedish musician. Matsson tapped Jeroen Dankers to direct the “Every Little Heart” video. The visual is the first part of a trilogy.
