An interview with renowned hip hop artist Talib Kweli is featured on the latest installment of JamBase partner Osiris Media Network podcast Eric Krasno Plus One. Kweli discusses a podcast he launched with Dave Chappelle, his acclaimed career, returning to the road and more with host and longtime collaborator Eric Krasno.
Kraz and Talib begin by talking about The Midnight Miracle, a new podcast hosted by Kweli, Chappelle and Yasiin Bey (Mos Def). Kweli explains how the podcast originated and bringing music into the mix. “We were in love with the same girl, so we used to see each in her hallway,” Talib reveals of first meeting Dave Chappelle. The musician then welcomed the comedian to watch and participate in sessions at New York City’s Electric Lady Studios that yielded Reflection Eternal’s debut album, 2000’s Train Of Thought. Eric shares that he nearly contributed the intro to Chappelle’s Show.

The host then asks Kweli how he forged a relationship with Mos Def. “To be frank, I was in awe of him, what he was doing creatively around the city, that was exactly what I wanted to be doing,” Talib says. “Our friendship developed around the bookstore,” he adds referring to his time working at Nkiru Books. Talib Kweli and Mos Def went on to form Black Star.
Kweli and Krasno go on to talk about independent record labels versus major labels as Talib explains why he signed with Rawkus Records. “I look back on the era and I’m like I had my hand in all of it,” Talib notes. Eric discusses his favorite hip hop and specifically his appreciation for Hi-Tek. Other topics the pair dive into include how Black Star inspired Soulive, Talib’s foray into the world of journalism, music Kweli is working on, why he’s not excited to tour and more.
