Lockn’ Festival :: 8.27.17
:: Infinity Downs Farm :: Arrington, VA

While the final day of this year’s Lockn’ Festival concluded with phil.moe and The Avett Brothers with Bob Weir collaborations featuring members of the Grateful Dead, there was a full slate of action ahead of the headliners. In what has become a Sunday Lockn’ tradition, Keller Williams’ Grateful Gospel presented songs from the more spiritual side of the Garcia/Grateful Dead repertoire. A more local act then stepped into the spotlight as Anthony Rosano & The Conqueroos showed off a bluesy brand of hard-hitting rock. The Eric Krasno Band was up next and saw the Soulive/Lettuce guitarist lead his solo group through songs from last year’s Blood From A Stone as well as a smoking cover of “Manic Depression.” Up next was the Dirty Dozen Brass Band who mixed NOLA-flavored originals with covers such as a horn-driven version of “Superstition.”

Moonalice closed out the action on the Relix Stage with special guest Jorma Kaukonen joining in for “I Know You Rider,” “Good Shepherd,” “I See The Light,” “Eight Miles High” and more. The Record Company were the first band of the day to play the Main Stage and the power trio romped through a set of powerful originals including “Baby I’m Broken,” “The Burner” and “In The Mood For You.” Frontman Chris Vos was in fine form throughout, especially on a cover of “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys. Florida swamp-rockers JJ Grey & Mofro also brought their A Game for a career-spanning set that featured such beloved originals as “Country Ghetto,” “Gal Youngin’,” “Lazy Fo’ Acre” and “Ho Cake.” Nashville’s Margo Price then showed off a brand of outlaw country that has won her many fans over the past few years. She worked through originals including the title track from her recently released Weakness EP with covers of Kris Kristofferson’s “Me & Bobby McGee” and Commander Cody’s “Stems & Seeds.”

The Revivalists played an early evening set on the Main Stage that pulled heavily from 2015’s Men Amongst Mountains. David Shaw displayed the stage presence which makes him such a force on songs like “It Was A Sin,” “All In The Family” and “Wish I Knew You.” The band concluded their set with a recently debuted cover of The Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Next up was phil.moe featuring Phil Lesh with moe. Head here for a full report of phil.moe and here for a look at the festival-closing set from The Avett Brothers with Bob Weir.
