Yesterday marked 50 years to the day that Bob Dylan infamously shocked the assembled audience at the Newport Folk Festival by “going electric” and performing a set with amplified instruments. Backed by Al Kooper on organ, Barry Goldberg on piano and Paul Butterfield Blues Band members Mike Bloomfield on lead guitar, Jerome Arnold on bass and Sam Lay on drums Dylan ran through three electric songs (and two solo acoustic tunes) on July 25, 1965 forever changing the landscape of rock ‘n’ roll history.

The 1964 Sunburst Fender Stratocaster guitar played by Dylan at Newport ‘65 (and now owned by Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay) is currently on display at the festival grounds in Rhode Island for attendees and artists at this year’s event to view. Below is a brief clip featuring footage of Jason Isbell playing the Strat at the festival yesterday:

Prior to the notorious 1965 appearance, Dylan had previously played Newport in 1963 and again in 1964. Dylan himself last appeared at Newport for a performance at the 2002 festival. Below watch the opening electric “Maggie’s Farm” as well as “Like A Rolling Stone” from Dylan’s 1965 performance half a century ago.
