Sublime Announces ‘Until The Sun Explodes,’ 1st New Album Since 1996

Almost exactly a year to the day after Sublime revealed they were recording their first album with frontman Jakob Nowell, the trio officially confirmed Until The Sun Explodes arrives on June 12 on Atlantic Records. The group also shared the title track and lead single from the highly anticipated record.

Jakob Nowell, the son of late co-founding frontman Bradley Nowell, is joined in the current iteration of Sublime by co-founders bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh. Sublime’s previous record, a self-titled effort, was released 30 years ago. Following Bradley Nowell’s death from an overdose in 1996 at age 28, Sublime disbanded. Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh later revived the project in 2009 as Sublime with Rome, featuring Rome Ramirez on vocals and guitar. Gaugh exited in 2011, and Ramirez remained until his departure in 2023.

Until The Sun Explodes features collaborations with G. Love, HR (of Bad Brains) and Pennywise's Fletcher Dragge, among others. The 21-track project was recorded with producer Jon Joseph and is said in press materials to be “rooted in the band’s classic sound while opening a new chapter.”

Jakob Nowell honors his late father on the titular “Until The Sun Explodes.” The video for the track was filmed in the band’s hometown of Long Beach, California with appearances from professional skateboarders Omar Hassan and Christian Hosoi. “The last Sublime record that will ever be made is Self-Titled. There’s no replacing history, period,” Jakob said in reference to 1996’s Sublime.

“Until the Sun Explodes the album is an epilogue, and ‘Until the Sun Explodes’ the single is the epilogue to the epilogue. It is a tribute to the expansive works of Sublime, it is an acknowledgment for all that my father has done for me my entire life, and most importantly it is a thank you. I love you dad, and I owe you my life,” the singer and songwriter added.

Sublime will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their self-titled 1996 LP with a two-night stand at Colorado’s iconic Red Rock Amphitheatre in April. The trio also has dates booked around the world through November.
