Sturgill Simpson Performs ‘Life Of Sin’ On ‘Fallon’
By Scott Bernstein Jan 5, 2021 • 6:33 am PST

Sturgill Simpson and his all-star bluegrass band served as the musical guests on Monday’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Simpson led the troupe through “Life Of Sin” from Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 – The Butcher Shoppe Sessions, one of two bluegrass albums Sturgill released in 2020.
“Life Of Sin” was recorded by Sturgill and the group dubbed “The Hillbilly Avengers” at The Station Inn in Nashville. The Hillbilly Avengers consist of fiddler Stuart Duncan, drummer Miles Miller, guitarist Tim O’Brien, mandolinist Sierra Hull, bassist Mike Bub and banjo players Scott Vestal and Mark Howard.

Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 – The Butcher Shoppe Sessions came out in October and was followed by Cuttin’ Grass’ Vol 2 – The Cowboy Arms Sessions in December. “Cuttin’ Grass will be my retirement plan,” Sturgill said about the potential for future installments. “I’ve got one more album to do in terms of the five-album narrative I’ve always been talking about, and after that. I’ll just keep cuttin’ grass—there’ll probably be 17 of these things when it’s all said and done. But I’ve also learned that I don’t want to put any boundaries on myself ever again. Even with Sailor’s Guide or Sound & Fury, I went in saying ‘This is what I want to do,’ and then you get in there and you’re sort of riding that lightning. You don’t ever want to put any limitations on your own expression or creativity.”
