The String Cheese Incident launched their spring tour last night with a concert at Ting Pavilion in Charlottesville, Virginia. Cheese, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2024, were joined by Leftover Salmon multi-instrumentalist Jay Starling for a beloved original and pair of choice covers at the show.

Last night marked The String Cheese Incident’s first headlining show of the year and they fittingly kicked off the festivities with “Lonesome Road Blues.” The traditional bluegrass song was last played by the band way back July 1, 2016 as per Phantasy Tour’s stats — a gap of 277 concerts. Next came oldie “Outside & Inside” before the group turned to their 2023 album, Lend Me A Hand, for “Enjoy The Ride.” More fresh material would follow the ensuing “Mouna Bowa” and “Get Tight” as The String Cheese Incident offered the live debut of their new single, “Roll Around The Sun.” The set came to a close with a “Restless Wind” that bled into “Trip The Light Fantastic.”

The second set began with Starling aboard for fan-favorite “Black Clouds” after a group hoot led by guitarist Bill Nershi. Keyboardist/dobroist Jay Starling is a Charlottesville local and sat-in with Cheese when they last came to the city back in 2022. The expansive “Black Clouds” gave way to a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman” that saw Starling tear it up on dobro.

SCI continued on sans Starling by pairing early-’00s originals “Eye Know Why” and “Tinder Box.” Bassist Keith Moseley then captained a take on “Tore Up Over You,” the Hank Ballard tune often covered by the Jerry Garcia Band. A run of staples “Song In My Head,” “Rollover” and “Valley Of The Jig” ended last night’s second set.

Jay Starling returned with dobro in hand to accompany The String Cheese Incident on their encore in Charlottesville. Starling and SCI delivered a take on “Ring Of Fire.” Cheese hadn’t performed the Johnny Cash classic since July 7, 2017.
