On Wednesday, Steve Kimock led the second of three Steve Kimock & Friends concerts at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California. The guitarist’s band for the run features drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and bassist Reed Mathis. Multi-instrumentalist Leslie Mendelson sat-in for most of the evening’s second set.

Last night’s first set was straight out of the Steve Kimock Band days filled with decades-old compositions. Steve, John, Jeff and Reed opened with a gorgeous “Cole’s Law” they worked into a standout “Tangled Hangers.” The old school start to the night continued with “Ice Cream” and a “Five B4 Funk” set closer. After beginning the second set with “High & Lonesome,” Leslie Mendelson emerged. Mendelson and Chimenti both played keys for “Sagan,” the 2017 single from Steve’s KIMOCK project with Leslie, John and Bobby Vega.

Next, Leslie strapped on a guitar and took center stage to lead a cover of Charles Johnson’s “My Brothers & Sisters.” Steve Kimock had a proud moment in performing “Invocation I,” a song put together by John that was inspired by the album Streaming Wisdom by W.A. Mathieu. Steve told the crowd about the origins of the tune and was beaming with pride. The concert ended with a pair of covers as the quintet worked through Thigpen, Banks and Marion’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” as well as Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker.” Watch the entire show below thanks to the venue:
