Stephen Marley’s upcoming guest-filled album contains contributions from Bob Weir, Eric Clapton and more. Old Soul is set to arrive on September 15 via Gong Collective/UMe/Ghetto Youths International and was recently previewed with the track “Cool As The Breeze.”
Old Soul also sees guest spots from Stephen’s brothers Ziggy Marley and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley as well as Buju Banton and Slightly Stoopid. Clapton plays guitar on an acoustic version of Stephen’s father Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff,” which EC recorded in 1974. Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros and Jack Johnson contribute to the record’s final track, “Winding Roads,” captured at Bobby’s TRI Studios.
The 14-track LP marks Stephen Marley’s first full-length solo project since 2016 following Revelation Pt. 2 – The Fruit of Life. Stephen heralded Old Soul earlier this year with a lyric video for the title track.
The new record is largely a stripped down affair captured at a new studio Stephen set up on a remote family farm in the Florida countryside. Jamming in a converted garage, the instrumentation includes binghi drums, bass, acoustic guitar and flute. Old Soul is also an eclectic effort, boasting reggae rarities like the Lee “Scratch” Perry-composed “Thanks We Get (Do Fi Dem),” along with songs from The Beatles (“Don’t Let Me Down”), Frank Sinatra (“These Foolish Things”) and Ray Charles (“Georgia On My Mind”).
“You have to be true to yourself,” Stephen said about the wide-ranging material on the LP. “I refuse to be put into any category. I am inspired by everything. So if I feel like I want to play some jazz music, I will go play some jazz music. Who dig it, dig it.”
