Stephen Malkmus, William Tyler & Others To Play David Berman Tribute Concert
Co-founding Silver Jews members Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and former member William Tyler will honor their band mate David Berman at an event taking place on what would have been the late musician’s 53rd birthday. Bike Chain Rain: A Birthday Tribute To David Cloud Berman will be held on January 4 at Bunk Bar in Portland, Oregon.
Malkmus and Nastanovich co-founded Silver Jews with Berman, who in August died by suicide. Tyler later spent time as a member of the project. Berman this year released the debut self-titled Purple Mountains album, which was his first record of new material in nearly a decade.
Other musicians participating in the tribute concert include Rebecca Gates, Clay Cole, Franklin Bruno, Oed Ronne, A Certain Smile and “special guests.” A number of authors will also be part of the tribute, with Kevin Sampsell, Chelsey Johnson, Jon Raymond, Mo Daviau, Kjerstin Johnson, Daniel Elder and Sophia Shalmiyev on the lineup as well. A description for the event reads:
Musicians, writers, poets, fans and friends will play his songs, read his work/tributes and tell stories about the great American poet and songwriter David Cloud Berman (Purple Mountains, Silver Jews) on what should have been his 53rd birthday.
Tickets to Bike Chain Rain: A Birthday Tribute To David Cloud Berman are sold out.
