Steely Dan Welcomes Founding Member For Tour Finale In NYC

On Saturday night, Steely Dan brought this year’s “Rockabye Gollie Angel” tour to a close at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The theme for the night was the ridiculous “The Most Unforgettable Night of Whatever…Featuring Spectacular Musical Guests, Glorious Tunes and Riffage, and Whatever the Party Calls for! Parking Validated for First Dozen Diehard Fans.” While the setlist wasn’t far afield from typical tour performances, the evening will likely best be remembered as the night founding member Denny Dias sat-in with Steely Dan.

In 1970, Dias famously put an advert in the Village Voice reading, “Looking for keyboardist and bassist. Must have jazz chops! Assholes need not apply.” Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were among those who responded to Denny’s ad and shortly thereafter the threesome moved to California, recruited other musicians and formed Steely Dan. The guitarist was a member of Steely Dan over the course of the band’s early years and contributed to all of their ’70s studio albums.

Denny Dias returned to the fold on Saturday night to contribute to eight Steely Dan classics including the “Bodhisattva” opener as well as such gems as “Josie,” “Peg,” “My Old School” and “Reelin’ In The Years.” Setlist-wise, Steely Dan’s finale featured the tour’s third “Pearl Of The Quarter,” tenth “Godwacker” and “Green Earrings” and fifth “Gaucho.”
