Watch Spafford Devote Entire Set To Hour-Long ‘Todd’s Tots’ In Louisville

Spafford brought their late fall tour to the Mercury Ballroom in Louisville, Kentucky on Tuesday. The jam quartet treated fans to a 61-minute exploration of “Todd’s Tots” during the one-song first set.

Spafford debuted “Todd’s Tots” on May 1, 2015, at Flagstaff’s Orpheum Theater in the band’s home state of Arizona, as per Spaffnerds. “Todd’s Tots” closes Spafford’s 2018 studio album, For Amusement Only.

In Louisville, the band — guitarist Brian Moss, drummer Nick Tkachyk, keyboardist Cory Schechtman and touring bassist Shon Gordon — offered an improvisational adventure on “Todd’s Tots.” Following the composed section, the band began coloring outside the lines with an extensive jam that ranged from fanciful vibes to full-tilt boogie to electronic explorations.

A relatively busy four-song second set followed, which got underway with a poem, “Chuck’s Dream,” from longtime collaborator and the band’s namesake Chuck Spafford Johnson. Spaff then went “Night After Night” ahead of an “Electric Taco Stand” > “Alternate Ending” > “Electric Taco Stand” sequence. The first set came to a close with a substantial “The Remedy.”

Spafford returned to encore with just the fifth performance of Soft Cell’’s take on the 1964 Gloria Jones single, “Tainted Love.” Debuted in 2016, the band’s first three covers of the ‘80s hit came on or around Halloween. However, the song has found its way into the rotation this year making its first appearance outside of the Halloween season on November 22 in Boulder, Colorado.
