Songs Of Their Own | The Kind Buds – High Time
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, JamBase teamed with Telefunken to produce the Songs Of Their Own 50-day tribute series featuring a daily cover of a Grateful Dead original song and culminating with our grand finale 50th video premiering the day of the final Fare Thee Well show in Chicago on July 5. We started the series with a list of 100 Grateful Dead original songs (exclusively their tunes, not covers they often played) and asked many of our favorite artists to record cover versions either at the JamBase office in San Francisco, at one of the many venues around the Bay Area, at Telefunken’s Connecticut studios and beyond. No song was allowed to be covered twice, and today’s participants The Kind Buds showed us “High Time.”
The second song on side-A of the Grateful Dead’s 1970 album Workingman’s Dead, the first known live performance of “High Time” came June 21, 1969 at the Fillmore East in San Francisco. Penned by Robert Hunter (whose 74th birthday is today) and Jerry Garcia, the piece was performed only about 130 times by The Dead, nearly half of those coming between 1969 and 1970. Sporadically abandoned and revived throughout the rest of the band’s live career, “High Time” went long stretches without being played, often lasting several years at time. Performed just once in 1995, the last “High Time” was had on March 24 at the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The aptly named Vermont-based acoustic duo The Kind Buds features guitarists Bud Johnson and Budd Johnson. The pair headed down to Bushnell Park in Hartford, Connecticut to meet up with our partners at Telefunken to record “High Time” in the park. Bud and Budd will be in Chicago performing sets at the Hyatt Regency in the afternoon prior to each of the three Fare Thee Well concerts at Soldier Field.
