The Skiffle Players have detailed their upcoming release Piffle Sayers EP which comes out on Spiritual Pajamas on July 20. The collective shared the lead single, an arrangement of the traditional English folk song “Jonny Todd.”

Initially assembled for what was believed to be a one-off concert in Big Sur, California, The Skiffle Players features guitarist Neal Casal (Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Circles around the Sun), bassist Dan Horne (Circles Around the Sun, Jonathan Wilson), percussionist Aaron Sperske (Beachwood Sparks), guitarist Cass McCombs and the group’s official leader and founder, multi-instrumentalist Farmer Dave Scher, issued their debut LP Skifflin in 2016.

The seven songs featured on the new EP were recorded during the same sessions that produced the previous album. A new full-length studio album is currently being prepared for a release this fall.

According to the band, the term “skiffle” may originate with “Memphis jug band music of the ’20s. It seems to have emigrated to England with the U.S. soldiers during WW2 and was taken up by a new generation, beginning with Lonnie Donegan, ending with The Quarrymen aka The Beatles.”
