“This is no ‘neo-soul’; this is the real deal.” -Newsweek

Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings
2008 picked up where 2007 left off for renowned soul and funk maestros Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. The nine-piece band has maintained the torrid pace they kick-started last year with the release of their now wildly-acclaimed album, 100 Days, 100 Nights, from Brooklyn’s Daptone Records. Their third full-length effort has garnered rave reviews from across the globe on its way to cracking the upper echelons of numerous “Best of 2007” charts and Editor’s picks. The band has become a bonafide multi-media favorite, having appeared on CNN, Good Morning New York, MTV News, and recently were allowed to funkify the famous Ed Sullivan Theater for the Late Show with David Letterman. Future television appearances are quickly approaching as the band will soon tape Austin City Limits and play Late Night with Conan O’Brian on June 11.

Moreover, the group’s first ever music video for 100 Days, 100 Nights had a featured debut on YouTube.com and has since been in heavy rotation on BET-J and VH1 Sub-Soul. Not to be left out, National Public Radio has also taken notice, from Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Fair Game, Studio 360, Morning Edition and World Café Live. The album has sold 70,000 copies to date and continues to sell weekly.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have also been involved in a number of exciting collaborative projects with a diverse range of artists. Ms. Jones celebrated her silver-screen debut in the Denzel Washington-helmed feature film, The Great Debaters, in which she acted, sang, and recorded the majority of the movie’s soundtrack. In addition, Sharon hit the studio and stage with the likes of David Byrne, Mark Ronson and Steve Buscemi. Not to be outdone, the Dap-Kings’ musical chops have also been in high-demand. Legendary soul icon Al Green recently tapped their services for his impending Blue Note release, Lay It Down; Public Enemy beatmaster/producer Hank Shocklee utilized them for the soundtrack for the feature film, American Gangster; and Jay-Z garnered himself a Number #1 smash hit, “Roc Boys,” by sampling a song by Dap-King side project, the Menahan Street Band. Finally, bandleader/producer/label impresario Gabe Roth won a Grammy for his work engineering Amy Winehouse’s blowout, five-time Grammy winner, Back in Black, an album for which the Dap-Kings provided much of the music, including on such breakout hits as “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good.”

Actually, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are not just picking up where they left off in 2007. They’re breaking new barriers.
