It’s a rare occurrence, at least for me, to be able to pinpoint with certainty the exact moment I first heard a particular singer’s voice on record. But in regards to the late great Sharon Jones, I’ll never forget the first time her soulful sound filled my earphones and made my head bob along in utter appreciation.

At the time I was living in Chicago and riding the El home from Midway airport. That Orange Line ride was one I remember vividly because on my iPod was her second LP with The Dap-Kings, 2005’s Naturally. Her at time just-released album was my introduction to Jones and her funky backing group. The record opens with “How Do I Let a Good Man Down?” and to this day it’s my favorite Sharon Jones cut. Every time I hear it played I’m instantly back on the train, being wowed by the undeniable talent and authenticity bursting through my headphones.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings were guests on an episode of Austin City Limits in 2008. The program has shared official footage of their performance of “How Do I Let a Good Man Down?” which showcases the vocalist, who died last week at age 60, doing what she did best:
