Second Phish From The Archives Magnaball Edition Airs

Phish‘s Magnaball festival today aired the second of three From The Archives installments on the fest’s radio station The Bunny. Just like Thursday’s From The Archives set, Phish archivist (and Follow Friday selection) Kevin Shapiro served up some choice cuts from the band’s vault, sharing more notable moments in Phish history.

Kevin kicked off the Magnaball From The Archives Volume 2 installment with an intensely rocking and equally exploratory recording of “Ghost” Phish played on July, 2, 1998 at The Grey Hall in Copenhagen, Denmark. After noting the release of Phish’s album Rift on vinyl at Magnaball, next up on FTA was a live cut of the Rift track “It’s Ice” from March 17, 1992 that showcased plenty of interwoven interplay between guitarist Trey Anastasio and keyboardist Page McConnell. Shapiro dug up a standout recording of “2001” >“David Bowie” from August 17, 1993 at Memorial Hall in Kansas City that weaved through several distinct jams and modulated tempos. The first four songs alone clocked in at nearly a half and hour in running time.

Moving to slightly more recent output (although still over 15 years old), “Ya Mar” from May 23, 2000 at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City which was taped for VH-1’s Hard Rock Live was selected, featuring Trey calling out a rare “Ya Mar” jam in the key of “A.” Phish Lighting Director Chris Kuroda then joined the program and discussed lighting around the Magnaball site. Closing out Friday’s FTA installment was a “super epic and long” version of “Bathtub Gin” performed on July 25, 1997 at the Starplex Amphitheatre in Dallas followed by “Makisupa Policeman” -> “AC/DC Bag,” tallying 45 minutes of funk fueled fusion and raging rock ‘n’ roll to wrap things up.
