Ryan Adams will soon join an illustrious roster of artists who have released recordings of their performances at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Though not everyone went Adams’ route of issuing every note played over the course of two shows, nevertheless, plenty of outstanding recordings from one of the most icon rooms in the world have been shared over the years. This week’s Spotify playlist —Live At Carnegie Hall –compiles 20 outstanding performances from throughout the venue’s storied history.
There’s a healthy dose of jazz represented in the set, highlighted by the magnificent pairings of Ella Fitzgerald with Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane. Miles Davis as well as Nina Simone also appear on the playlist with respective performances from 1961 and 1963 in the building that opened in 1891. A cut from standout guitarist George Benson’s 1975 concert also made the list

Other impressive pairs making the playlist include folk legends Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie, Carole King and James Taylor, and Flatt & Scruggs. Seeger is also featured as a solo performer from a separate concert. The rest of the lineup boasts a varied array of live performances including rock acts Chicago, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jethro Tull, the soulfulness of Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers and Jimmy Reed, folk from Bob Dylan and Ani Difranco and the traditional sounds of Buena Vista Social Club and Ravi Shankar.
