UK trip-hop and Americana are not two genres one would think fit together but the uber-talented Sarah Jarosz impressively pulls it off. Jarosz added Massive Attack‘s “Teardrop” to her repertoire this year and shared official video of the cover from a May concert in Boston.

“I love getting to do this song each night,” Jarosz wrote of the cover she has sung at each of 2024 shows following the release of her latest album, Polaroid Lovers. Sarah Jarosz is joined on “Teardrop” by her band of guitarist Seth Taylor, bassist Daniel Kimbro and drummer Eric Doob.

Massive Attack originally issued “Teardrop” on their 1998 studio album, Mezzanine. Vocalist Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins wrote the lyrics and sang the vocals after Massive Attack chose her to sing “Teardrop” over Madonna. The song gave the trio their lone top-10 hit in their home country.

While Sarah Jarosz only started performing “Teardrop” at her own shows in February, it was not the first time she covered the song. Jarosz led the Live From Here band through the Massive Attack classic in 2018 during Chris Thile‘s time as host of the nationally-syndicated public radio show.

Live From Here music director Mike Elizondo came up with the idea to have Sarah Jarosz sing “Teardrop.” Jarosz went on to cover the song with Punch Brothers several times in 2022.
