The Rolling Stones Finally Play New Orleans

The Rolling Stones finally played New Orleans 25 years after their last performance in the Big Easy, two months after they were originally supposed to headline Jazz Fest and one day after the rescheduled date was postponed due to Hurricane Barry. The concert took place at Mercedes-Benz Superdome and featured support from NOLA’s own Dumpstaphunk and The Soul Rebels.

The band members stuck around New Orleans through the storm and most were spotted around town over the weekend. Mick Jagger and company immediately referenced the storm that led the postponement from Sunday to Monday by opening with “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” complete with the lyric, “I was born in a cross-fire hurricane.” Next up was the tour’s third “Let’s Spend The Night Together” and staple “Tumbling Dice.” Then, The Stones performed the recently busted out “Sad Sad Sad.”

The Rolling Stones give fans the opportunity to vote on one song they play at each show. On Monday, “Under My Thumb” won out over “Live With Me,” “Harlem Shuffle” and “Bitch.” The track from 1966’s Aftermath was last performed on July 4, 2018. From there, the band played “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and then moved to the B-Stage for stripped-down performances of “Angie” and “Dead Flowers.” At one point, Jagger took an opportunity to apologize for the group cancelling their Jazz Fest appearance after he underwent surgery. “I’m very sorry we missed the Jazz Fest,” Mick said as per Keith Spera’s review. “I’m sure it was great. I heard it was great.” Jagger also made references to the city’s food and local venue Preservation Hall.

Each concert of the tour has stuck to a similar path following the B-Stage segment. Once again, “Sympathy For The Devil” and “Honky Tonk Woman” were followed by Keith Richards leading the group through “Slipping Away” and “Before They Make Me Run.” The rest of the night featured a bevy of hits, an extended “Midnight Rambler” and the typical “Gimme Shelter”/”(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” encore.
