Rodney Crowell Sports John Lennon’s ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ Suit In ‘Lucky’ Video

Singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell wore a suit that belonged to The Beatles’ John Lennon in the video for his latest single, “Lucky,” The track will be included on Crowell’s upcoming album, The Chicago Sessions, which was produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy.

Set for release on May 5, The Chicago Sessions was recorded at Wilco’s The Loft studio in Chicago. The 10-song set contains contributions from three musicians Crowell brought to Chicago — guitarist Jedd Hughes, pianist Catherine Marx and bassist Zachariah Hickman — along with local drummers John Perrine and Spencer Tweedy (Jeff’s son).

The album features Jeff Tweedy on the lead single he co-wrote with Crowell, “Everything At Once.” Crowell also released the single, “Loving You Is the Only Way to Fly,” which he co-wrote with Hughes and Sarah Buxton. The video for the album’s lead track, “Lucky,” was directed by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard.

“For the past 30-odd-years, I’ve owned the suit John Lennon wore in the opening scene of A Hard Day’s Night,” Crowell stated, “a birthday gift from Rosanne Cash courtesy of a Sotheby’s auction of Fab Four memorabilia. I’ve worn it in public a few times, once on the David Letterman show and before that on a Country Music Award telecast. Only Roger Miller ever took notice. Smiling, he made the keen-eyed comment, ‘I like your teddy boy suit, Rodney.’ For the ‘Lucky’ video, we hit on the idea of paying tribute to sixties black and white, rock and roll TV shows like Hullabaloo and Shindig. For me, the wardrobe choice was simple: Saville Row gaberdine.”
