Sacred steel ace Robert Randolph signed with the storied Sun Records and will release his first album on the label, Preacher Kids, on June 27. The Shooter Jennings-produced LP is previewed with the single “Sinner.”

“This album’s gritty and swampy roots vibe makes it the perfect record to kick off my journey with Sun Records,” Randolph stated. “It’s a full-circle moment for me to team up with a label that not only shaped the foundation of American music but continues to champion artists pushing that legacy forward.”

Randolph and band convened at Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles to cut Preacher Kids. The album sees guest spots from Margo Price (“King Karma”) and Judith Hill (“When Will The Love Rain Down”) and includes contributions from Tash Neal (guitar), Jay White (bass) and Willie Barthel (drums).

“Everyone involved in this record — from the band to the people who inspired it — shares a similar story. We’re all preacher’s kids,” Randolph said. “This album feels like our collective diary, rooted in gospel and shaped by the journey from the church to the stages of rock and blues.”

Randolph and company also harkened back to rock and blues legends to compose the material on Preacher Kids.

“Over the years, I have heard people talk about how Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin would just roll the tape and write songs while jamming. That’s what we did on this album,” Randolph says. “Everybody was like ‘what was that thing you played?’ and we’d be like ‘we just made it up!’”

The smoking steel-laced single “Sinner” carries the refrain “You can call me a sinner/Ain’t nobody sinnin’ alone.” Preview Preacher Kids with the lyric video for “Sinner” below:
