The Travelin’ McCourys have announced founding member Rob McCoury is taking a sabbatical from the band. Del McCoury’s youngest son will be participating in a pilot program, partially funded by SCI’s Bill Nershi, to study the Polynesian influence on progressive string music. Rob’s return date has not been disclosed. His last performance with the group took place this past Saturday at the Moontower Festival.

Rob McCoury is not only well-versed in music history, but also instrument construction, wildlife management and numerous ancient brewing techniques. “Bela and Jim Mills inspired me with their travels to Africa, and I have often found myself under the influence of Polynesian culture. There’s a paper umbrella and a world of knowledge in my future,” Rob said in a statement.

Andy Thorn of Leftover Salmon will join The Travelin’ McCourys initially on a run of Grateful Ball dates spanning September 7 – 9.
