Charitable organization the Rex Foundation’s 40th anniversary will be commemorated this summer with a special show featuring Dark Star Orchestra with Melvin Seals and JGB. The benefit concert will take place at The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California on July 13.

The date of the show is a memorable one in Grateful Dead history, as the band played an unforgettable concert at The Berkeley Greek on July 13, 1984. Shortly after launching the only “Dark Star” encore, and lone version of the psychedelic era classic performed between 1981 and 1989, a shooting star was observed by multiple audience members crossing the sky above the venue. DSO will recreate the Dead’s July 13, 1984 setlist at the Berkeley Greek 40 years later.

Established by the Grateful Dead in 1983 with the first benefit concert held in 1984, the Rex Foundation served as the band’s non-profit charitable organization. This band, through the Rex Foundation, proactively supported creative endeavors in the arts, sciences and education until the Dead dissolved following Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995. The organization moved forward and turned its focus to small nonprofits in the worlds of the environment, arts, Native American issues and education after Garcia’s passing. This year, the Rex Foundation will celebrate giving over $10 million to over 1,400 grantees since its founding.
