Remembering Sharon Jones: A Career-Spanning Spotify Playlist

It’s been just over one week since soul singer Sharon Jones died following a series of strokes and battle with pancreatic cancer. Best-known for her output leading Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, the 60-year-old was beloved by fans and fellow musicians alike. This week’s edition of Saturday Stream looks back at the outstanding recordings Jones made with and without her funky backing band during her tragically cut-short career.
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Daptone Records made their debut with the 2002 LP Dap Dippin’ with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and followed with subsequent albums Naturally in 2005, 100 Days, 100 Nights in 2007, I Learned the Hard Way in 2010 and Give The People What They Want in 2014. A compilation of non-album tracks Soul Time! was issued by Daptone in 2011 and their holiday album It’s A Holiday Soul Party came out last year. A pair of tracks from each of those records (except only one from the holiday LP) are featured in the Spotify Playlist.
Jones can be heard performing live while backing Lou Reed in 2008 as well as joining Tedeschi Trucks Band for a live Spotify Sessions appearance. There’s a track from a children’s album featuring John Medeski and others, and a song where she joins legendary organ whiz Booker T. Jones. Jones and The Dap-Kings are also featured performing “Goldfinger” and a Gregg Allman-approved cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Midnight Rider.” Finally, the set closes with the powerful “I’m Still Here” from the soundtrack to the 2015 documentary film Miss Sharon Jones!.
