Frank Zappa – The Crux Of The Biscuit

The Scoop: In 1974 Frank Zappa released Apostrophe (‘) his most commercially accessible and successful album which went gold and landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart. The Crux Of The Biscuit documents the creation of the LP as it features rare alternate mixes, live performances and studio session outtakes from the period in which Apostrophe (‘) was produced. Frank Zappa – Frank Zappa For President

The Scoop: Just as the dramatic 2016 presidential election heats up comes the release of Frank Zappa For President from the Zappa Family Trust’s Zappa Records imprint. The seven-track effort features previously unreleased FZ compositions realized on the Synclavier paired with other relevant tracks mined from Frank’s archives. Frank Zappa For President, as I bet you’ve guessed, has a political thread tying it all together.

Jeff Beck – Loud Hailer

The Scoop: Loud Hailer is the first new studio effort from legendary guitarist Jeff Beck in six years. The Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer chose the title (which is another name for a megaphone) because he “wanted to make a statement about some of the nasty things I see going on in the world today, and I loved the idea of being at a rally and using this loud device to shout my point of view.” Beck enlisted accomplished producer Filippo Cimatti who recruited guitarist Carmen Vandenberg, drummer Davide Sollazzi and bassist Giovanni Pallotti to record the album. Nine tracks include vocals by Rosie Bones while the remaining two are instrumental. Here’s the lyric video for “Live In The Dark” featuring Bones on vocals:

Lotus – Eat The Light

The Scoop: Philadelphia livetronica act Lotus have gone in a new direction for their latest studio effort, Eat The Light. The follow-up to 2014’s The Gilded Age features vocals on every track marking a first for the band. Lotus employed a number of vocalists to contribute to the 10-track release including Gabe Otto, Mutlu, Johnny Fissinger and Oriel Poole. Otto may be best remembered by Lotus fans as the vocalist who joined the band for a series of Talking Heads tribute sets. The group laid down 18 tracks last year and picked the 10 best for Eat The Light which has songs spanning many different genres. Watch a teaser for the new album:

Michael Kiwanuka – Love & Hate

The Scoop: On his 2012 debut album, Coming Home, Michael Kiwanuka delivered a captivating set of folk-soul that melded Bill Withers with Van Morrison with a healthy dash of Ben Harper. For his long-awaited and much-anticipated follow up, Love & Hate, the 29-year-old Kiwanuka teamed up with IT-producer Danger Mouse as well as London-based hip hop producer Inflo. This time around the British singer-songwriter moved into the realm of 1970s psychedelic-soul taking cues from The Temptations’ Psychedelic Shack record, Isaac Hayes, Pink Floyd and Funkadelic, all set to Kiwanuka’s emotionally charged lyrics that touch on everything from racial identity to failed relationships. Con Brio – Paradise

The Scoop: Paradise is the debut full-length released by Bay Area neo-soul outfit Con Brio. Vocalist Ziek McCarter, guitarist Benjamin Andrews, bassist Jonathan Kirchner, tenor saxophonist Marcus Stephens, trumpeter Brendan Liu and drummer Andrew Laubacher enlisted accomplished producer Mario Caldato Jr. for their first LP. On the night before recording of the album was set to commence, McCarter had a dream during which he was visited by his late Army veteran father, who was killed by police in 2011, who told Ziek, “Come with me to paradise.” The younger McCarter described the interaction as “one of the most spiritual moments of my life.” Watch the official video for the Black Lives Matter movement-inspired track “Free & Brave” below:
