Gimme Shelter In Place: Reed Mathis & Cochrane McMillan Cover ‘He’s Gone’

Gimme Shelter In Place is JamBase’s new daily archival video series launched for fans who right now can’t go see live music. Canceled concerts and music festivals due to social distancing and sheltering in place in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic brought a halt to tours around the globe. We know nothing can truly replace seeing live music in person, but we hope the Gimme Shelter In Place live videos provide a taste of those memorable experiences.
Today’s video was filmed in 2015 during a session for the JamBase Songs Of Their Own series featuring covers of Grateful Dead songs. Former Tea Leaf Green band mates, multi-instrumentalist Reed Mathis and percussionist Cochrane McMillan, were among the participants in the series of 50 videos that were released in the days leading up to the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary Fare Thee Well concerts. Back then, JamBase presented Mathis and McMillan’s cover of the Dead’s favorite “Deal.”

Along with “Deal,” Mathis and McMillan worked up covers of several other Grateful Dead originals. One of the outtakes was a performance of “He’s Gone,” which premieres below. While sheltering in place, Reed teleconferenced with JamBase CEO David Onigman about his livestreams, performing with Billy & The Kids, the Songs Of Their Own session and reveals a special treat in store for his Thursday night livestream, here’s their chat:
