Noveller: Fantastic Planet

Noveller is name Sarah Lipstate uses when playing her unique solo-guitar music. Through effects and electronics, the pieces on her new album, Fantastic Planet, are more like organic soundscapes than songs, per se. There are delicate moments of sheer beauty and others of building intensity; it’s light as air and heavy as an impending rainstorm all at once. This is heady zone-out music of high order…it’s not quite clear if the “fantastic planet” is the one she’s headed for or the one she just left, but it’s definitely worth taking the trip with her.

Mind Over Mirrors: The Voice Calling

I recently saw an opening set from Mind Over Mirrors where Jaime Fennelly, joined by Haley Fohr on vocals, sat in the center of a small darkened club, sitting at a pump organ (yes, a pump organ) and an array of electronica knobs and dials. The music was from the new album, The Voice Calling, a haunting, slow-moving ambient that crept into the skulls and poked around in the folds of the brain. The old-school-meets-new-school sound of that organ filtered and enhanced by synthetic symphonics evokes a haunted house of the future and Fohr’s low-key howling only adds to the effect. Creeping and beautiful.

Jonas Munk: Absorb/Fabric/Cascade

Jonas Munk is the guitar/producer of RecommNed favorites, Danish-jammers Causa Sui. On his own, Munk veers in a different direction, toward thoughtful sound collages, mixing analog and digital sounds, synthesizers, organs and beyond. His newest album, Absorb/Fabric/Cascade, contains three sonic excursions of the same names, the titles giving some starting reference to the unfolding music. These are long, slow-building, textured pieces: minimalism meets dense layering. Each track has its own personality, while adding to a larger mood over the course of the album. Hypnotizing and inspiring.
