Mimicking Birds: Eons
Sometimes an album just grabs you from the first note and you have no choice but to submit. Those are great records. But sometimes it’s those other albums, the ones that slowly consume you, that take a while to truly fall in love with… sometimes those are the ones that have the staying power. Mimicking Birds’ new album Eons is a great example, a hidden cave that doesn’t look like much at first glance, but once you crawl inside it’s another world of detail and delights. This one is full of them, each song a little gem with multiple facets and hidden value. This is headphone-ready, mellow, folk-pop for your autumn listening. Enjoy!

Lapland: Lapland
Like Mimicking Birds, Lapland’s self-titled debut comes off as a laid-back affair, but is a deceptively lush soundscape. Lapland is Josh Mease, the kind of do-it-all musician and songwriter who you should keep your eye on. The album feels like a cross between McCartney-Beatles and the Fleet Foxes or Midlake: old school pop mastery meets modern-day layered folk. There’s much to explore here, so get listening!

Zeus: Classic Zeus
We play favorites around here at the ole RecommNeds, hope you don’t mind. Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Toronto’s Zeus has been one of my consistent faves over the past few years so I’ve been eagerly anticipating their newest release. Titled Classic Zeus, it does not disappoint, although it does represent a slight departure in sound for the quartet. The bombastic classic rock sound is mostly gone and instead they’ve concentrated on a catchy hook-heavy sound, more “summer of love” than “arena Zeppelin.” The band proves their up for the change of scenery, laying down an easy, breezy set of sunny grooves.
