English rock band Radiohead teamed with composer Hans Zimmer to rework one of their songs for inclusion in the upcoming BBC series Blue Planet II. Today, footage from the show featuring the Zimmer/Radiohead track “(Ocean) Bloom” has been shared by the BBC.
The basis for “(Ocean) Bloom” was the Radiohead track “Bloom,” which opened 2011’s The King Of Limbs. Zimmer utilized the BBC Concert Orchestra to deconstruct the original into a completely new song. Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Hans Zimmer appeared on BBC Radio 6 to discuss the collaboration. “I was trying to be respectful and not ruin the song, if you know what I mean. If somebody hands you somebody else’s work, there’s responsibility and respect that comes with it,” Zimmer said. “The fact that this TV series is coming out at this moment, I hope rekindles our love of the oceans and our desire to understanding, really, our relationship to them,” Yorke added. “Like, ‘This is bigger than you. This is bigger than you.'”
