Pro-Shot Videos: Phish Shares All-Time ‘Taste’ & Standout ‘Scents’ From Baker’s Dozen Residency

While the historic Phish Baker’s Dozen residency of 13 shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City is complete, the band isn’t done rolling out professionally-shot videos from the majestic run. The two most recent clips include an all-time version of a song that isn’t normally used as an improvisational springboard as well as a standout take on an Undermind gem.
Up first is the “Taste” Phish laid down at The Garden this past Wednesday, the tenth show of the residency. The quartet took the Billy Breathes rocker well beyond its normal boundaries for the first time in the song’s 22-year history. By the time the adventurous “Taste” was finished, it clocked in at 18-minutes – or about six minutes longer than any other version. The Baker’s Dozen “Taste” scored both on the quantity and quality scales as the must-hear version featured bombastic drumming from Jon Fishman, glorious fills from Page McConnell, driving bass lines from Mike Gordon and varied leads and rhythmic work from Trey Anastasio. Watch the best “Taste” in Phish history:
This past Friday night’s second set featured a stellar, 16-minute “Scents & Subtle Sounds” that included two very different jam segments. Up first was a straight-forward rocking jam, which saw the band work in the chorus of “No Men In No Man’s Land” – a tune played earlier in Night 11’s closing stanza. The ripping improv contained multiple crowd-pleasing peaks that drove the Garden faithful wild. Around the ten-minute mark, Phish took a left turn into more blissful, major-key territory. “Scents” was a true Team Phish affair with all four members of the Vermont jam act making wonderful contributions to a very original piece of improv unlike any other played during the residency. LD Chris Kuroda was also on top of his game, accenting the jam with particularly cool designs. Check out the “Scents & Subtle Sounds” from Friday, August 4:
