Goose Welcomes Greensky Bluegrass’ Anders Beck & Paul Hoffman For ‘Atlantic City’ Cover

Goose and Greensky Bluegrass traded sit-ins during Friday night’s concert at Hayden Homes Amphitheater in Bend, Oregon, with the bands putting their own spin on a Bruce Springsteen classic along the way.

Greensky Bluegrass’ Anders Beck and Paul Hoffman joined Goose for “Atlantic City,” with Beck playing dobro and Hoffman contributing mandolin and vocals. The performance marked Goose’s sixth time covering the Springsteen staple, which the band first played publicly in 2020 for a livestream during the early days of the pandemic.

GSBG has covered “Atlantic City” over 200 times dating back to 2015. Both groups perform The Band’s interpretation of the Springsteen song, giving Beck and Hoffman a natural opportunity to join Goose on the tune originally released by Bruce on his Nebraska album in 1982.

Hoffman and Beck’s guest appearance came after Goose guitarist and vocalist Rick Mitarotonda sat in with Greensky Bluegrass earlier in the evening. Mitarotonda joined the jamgrass outfit for “What You Need” during a seven-song opening set that also featured “Reverend,” “Pig In A Pen,” “Solstice,” “Take Cover,” “Courage For The Road” and “Windshield.” Goose drummer Cotter Ellis made a quick cameo at the start of “What You Need” to hit a vibraslap.

The back-and-forth continued when Goose brought out Beck and Hoffman for the fourth song of their first set. “Atlantic City” followed “MEDIA,” “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet” > “Dustin Hoffman” and preceded “The Whales.” Goose then worked a first-time cover of Punch Brothers’ “My Oh My” into the set before closing the frame by linking “Madalena” with “Flodown.”

Goose opened the three-song second set with “Dripfield,” which remained unfinished before flowing into “Good2B,” the lead single from the quartet’s recently released BIG MODERN! LP. “Arrow” followed, and “Arcadia” brought the night to a close as the encore.

Friday marked the first of two consecutive Goose concerts at Hayden Homes Amphitheater. Greensky Bluegrass provided support for the opening night, while Buffalo Traffic Jam took the stage before Goose on Saturday.

The Bend concerts came as Goose continued their summer tour following a five-week break from the road. The band’s August run also includes three performances at Red Rocks Amphitheatre later this week.
