Pro-Shot Video: Phish Plays 30-Minute ‘Lawn Boy’ On Jam Filled Night In New York City

Phish is known for their prankster sense of humor, so when the band revealed the donut flavor for Tuesday night’s fourth of 13 Baker’s Dozen shows at Madison Square Garden was “jam filled” many thought it was too obvious for them to just fill the concert with improvisation. Perhaps they would play songs with “jam” in the title or cover acclaimed British band The Jam? Thankfully, the foursome kicked out the jams, some of which came out of songs they had never taken deep before. One such song was “Lawn Boy” and Phish has shared professionally-shot video of the monumental, 30-minute version on YouTube.
The all-time “Lawn Boy” began innocently enough with keyboardist Page McConnell showing off his lounge singer abilities as he normally does on the title track to Phish’s 1990 studio album. After bassist Mike Gordon took his usual solo, McConnell dusted off his Keytar and took a solo of his own. At this point it became clear this was not your normal “Lawn Boy.” In the middle of Page’s keytar solo, drummer Jon Fishman kicked into a groovy beat which laid the groundwork for the adventurous improvisation that was about to occur. Phish took “Lawn Boy” in various directions and explored vast improvisational terrain over the course of the 30-minute stunner.
