Pro-Shot Video: Phish Expands ‘Tube’ & ‘Chalk Dust Torture’ At Madison Square Garden

This past Wednesday’s Phish concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City featured a pair of cover debuts, a Prince cover bust out and plenty of jamming. One of the improvisational highlights of the night was the longest “Tube” of the era. Today, Phish have unveiled professionally-shot video of the standout “Tube.” Phish also shared pro-shot footage of the 24-minute “Chalk Dust Torture” from Friday night at MSG.

“Tube” is a Phish original that the band has played straight for nearly every version since their return in 2009. Last summer the quartet expanded beyond the song’s normal boundaries to the delight of fans at Chula Vista on July 23, 2016. Yet Wednesday’s rendition took the “Tube” jam a few steps further. The band took the normally dark improv to a blissed-out jam space and then returned to the end of the tune.

“Chalk Dust” also featured a major-key butter jam as part of the ground Phish explored over the course of 24 majestical minutes of improvisation. As Ben Greenfield pointed out, “‘Chalk Dust’ was a juggernaut, winding its way from buoyant melodic rock to pointy funk and finally, to an uplifting peak.” At points it almost felt as if Phish was jamming on “Harry Hood.”
