Pro-Shot Video: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Shares Wild Sequence From Brooklyn Bowl Run Finale

In March, Grateful Dead tribute act Joe Russo’s Almost Dead played a series of six shows at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City split up over two weekends. The second weekend found the band joined by bassist Oteil Burbridge for three shows as regular bassist Dave Dreiwitz was on tour with Ween. JRAD has just unveiled a stellar 24-minute sequence from their March 18th show with Burbridge at the Bowl.
The video below begins with what is titled a “Duo Jam,” yet features impressive contributions from all five members. From there, Almost Dead kicks into “Reuben & Cerise” sung by guitarist Tom Hamilton. JRAD was joined by Stuart Bogie on tenor sax for the “Reuben & Cerise” jam. The five-piece and their guest embark on a piece of improv that starts slow and builds to a huge peak ahead of a transition into “Viola Lee Blues.” Hamilton and Burbridge, in particular, shine on the stellar “Viola Lee” that went far beyond the song’s normal boundaries. A cool moment happens towards the end of the clip when JRAD toy with the tempo before concluding “Viola Lee Blues.”
