Counter-culture icon Wavy Gravy celebrated his 81st birthday with a pair of benefit concerts at Ardmore Music Hall near Philadelphia supporting the Rex Foundation and Camp Winnarainbow. The “Unlimited Devotion: A Weekend Of Goodness” shows last Friday and Saturday featured a pair of bands dubbed The Wavy All-Stars and The Gravy All-Stars who performed sets largely focused on the staples of the Grateful Dead’s repertoire.
The Wavy All-Stars lineup on Friday, June 9 comprised guitarists John Kadlecik and Steve Kimock, keyboardist Aron Magner, bassist Reed Mathis, drummer Jay Lane, saxophonist Kenny Brooks and vocalist Leslie Mendelson. The set began with “Bertha” and also featured takes on “Cassidy” and “Sugaree.” Todd Stoops joined on keys ahead of “Loose Lucy” and stuck around for “Dark Star” and “Terrapin Station.” The collective also worked up a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Oh, Sister” and closed the set with a rendition of “That’s What Love Will Make You Do.”
Saturday, June 10 featured a The Gravy All-Stars lineup made up of Kadlecik, Magner, drummers Michael Travis and Vinnie Amico, guitarist Tom Hamilton, bassist Marc Brownstein and saxophonist Karl Denson. The group coupled “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” with “Shakedown Street” to open the action on night two. A transition into “Eyes Of The World” was followed by “West L.A. Fadeaway.” Next up was “They Love Each Other” before “Scarlet Begonias” > “I Know You Rider” and “One More Saturday Night” closed out the set.
