Primus are on the lookout for a new drummer following the abrupt departure of Tim “Herb” Alexander. “We are currently taking submissions from all points in the universe for the position of Primus drummer/percussionist,” wrote the band on social media in announcing the open call.

“Seeking a well-mannered, affable individual with original sensibility and aesthetic, possessing a desire to open new doors in the creative world,” Primus continued. “Flashy chops are wonderful, but groove, pocket, and the ability to listen, react, and contribute to the musical conversation is a must.” Those interested are asked to send their resume and a recent video performance to drumsearch@primusville.com.

Tim “Herb” Alexander left Primus last month after his third stint in the band. Alexander originally joined Primus in 1989 and parted ways with bassist Les Claypool and guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde in 1996. The drummer’s second tenure spanned 2003 and 2010. Alexander came back into the fold once again in 2013.

Primus announced Alexander’s departure on October 29, noting the drummer had “lost his passion for playing.” Tim Alexander shared a full statement detailing his decision with Rolling Stone a week later.

“A lot of times, you do something you love for a long time, and sometimes the passion turns into a job, and sometimes that job doesn’t feel like it’s your being anymore,” Alexander explained. “Over time, I started realizing that it was affecting my physical life, it was affecting my mental life, and it was affecting my family life, and my heart just wasn’t in it,” the drummer continued. “When I discovered that I’m struggling with all these things, I had to sit and think about exactly what am I doing. I don’t think I’ve ever chosen my path in life, I think I’ve just always thought ‘I’m a drummer, I’m just gonna do music,’ and things came to me, accepting whatever happens.”

“An augmented version of Primus featuring members of Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade” will play a two-night New Year’s Eve run at the Fox Theater in Oakland. Tool drummer Danny Carey will be behind the kit for Primus at the Tool Live In The Sand destination event in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic next March.

Primus aims to have a new drummer when they launch the Sessanta 2025 tour with Puscifer and A Perfect Circle on April 24. The tour spans six weeks and hits cities across the U.S. and Canada through June 7.
