The Claypool Gold Tour rolled into North Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday for a concert at Firefly Distillery. Primus closed out the evening in collaborative fashion by teaming with members of The Claypool Lennon Delirium and Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade on a cover of The Beat’s “Mirror In The Bathroom.”
Les Claypool’s traveling revue features a full set from each of his three primary bands. While the Frog Brigade and Delirium have kept to similar setlists throughout the run, Primus has played over 40 different songs since the tour started in Reno on May 20.
Primus threw down a 10-song set in North Charleston featuring material from five of the trio’s nine studio albums. Claypool, drummer John Hoffman and guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde played a mix of staples such as “Harold Of The Rocks,” “The Ol’ Grizz,” “Welcome To This World” and “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver” and deep cuts. The latter category includes the underrated “The Seven,” a complex composition off 2017’s The Desaturating Seven.
The three-piece lit into fan favorite “Too Many Puppies” to get the encore underway. Les Claypool led a segue into “Mirror In The Bathroom” as The Claypool Lennon Delirium guitarist Sean Ono Lennon, keyboardist Harry Waters and drummer Paulo Baldi joined the fray along with Frog Brigade saxophonist Skerik and percussionist Mike Dillon. Waters and Baldi also back Claypool in Frog Brigade.
While Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade covered The Beat’s 1980 hit several times in 2023, the “Mirror In The Bathroom” performance in South Carolina was a Primus debut. The bassist handled lead vocals on the loose rendition, which featured solos from Skerik and Mike Dillon, to bring the night to an end.
The Claypool Gold Tour his St. Augustine, Florida on Friday, June 19. Primus, The Claypool Lennon Delirium and Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade will end their time on the road together on July 4 in Napa, California.
