This past weekend, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong presented their two-night “Festival Of Melting Lights” celebration at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. Saturday’s finale was highlighted by multiple appearances from Goose multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach, a rare cover of Foo Fighters’ “Learn To Fly” and frontman/guitarist Greg Ormont unveiling “The Jamtronica Song,” a parody of Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song.”
PPPP – Ormont, lead guitarist Jeremy Schon, bassist Ben Carrey and drummer Alex “Gator” Petropulos — invited Spafford to kick off the action on Friday and Great Blue to open on Saturday. The latter is a Connecticut-based band co-founded by Peter Anspach before he joined Goose in 2017.
Great Blue’s third gig of 2025 saw the quartet perform Goose repertoire gems “Pancakes,” “Doc Brown” and “Jeff Enborg.” Keyboardist Jeff Enborg sat in on his namesake song. The seven-song set also featured originals “Lily’s Tiger,” “Su Casa” and “C3PO” as well as a cover of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Around The World” sung by Greg Ormont.
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong brought out Anspach to play keys on “Show Me” and “Sunny Day” after opening their first set with “In The Bubble,” “Porcupine” and “Love Trap.” The quartet punctuated the frame by fitting their first “Learn To Fly” since 2023 within “High As Five.”
“Kiwi” got Pigeons’ second set underway. The band then performed their recently debuted cover of Collective Soul’s “Shine” and brand new original “Polaroid.” Next, Peter Anspach returned on guitar to let it rip on the beloved “Poseidon.” From there, Gator powered the instrumental “The Labyrinth.” Pigeons Playing Ping Pong tacked on live staple “Horizon” for good measure.
Greg Ormont emerged for the encore with an acoustic guitar to perform “The Jamtronica Song.” Ormont shouted out fellow jam scene tribe members Marc “Brownie” Brownstein and Aron Magner of the Disco Biscuits, Lotus’ Mike Greenfield, Phish bassist Mike Gordon, Andy Frasco, Dave Dreiwitz of Ween and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, siblings Clyde & Gracie Lawrence, Vulfpeck co-founder Jack Stratton, moe. guitarist Al Schnier, Soulive’s Eric Krasno, Alana Rocklin of STS9, Phish drummer Jon Fishman and vocalist Sammi Garett. He also mentioned Jeremy Salken, bandmate Jeremy Schon, Dogs In A Pile’s Jeremy Kaplan, photographer Jay Blakesberg, impresario Peter Shapiro, Lettuce guitarist Adam “Schmeans” Smirnoff, Lebo and himself.
The rest of the Pigeons came back for a Hanukkah-appropriate take on the traditional Hebrew song “Hava Nagila.” An effusive “Water” closed out the show and run.
