Last weekend, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong hosted their annual Domefest music festival at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio. The band shared the stage with a number of guests over the course of the weekend including TAUK keyboardist Alric Carter. PPPP shared official video of their “Beneath The Surface” collaboration with Carter.
The action started on Thursday night with a pre-party at Skully’s Music-Diner in Columbus, where the Baltimore-based jam quartet devoted their whole second set to a 70-minute version of “Hell Yeah.” Pigeons then played three sets on Friday as Domefest 2023 officially began. The group premiered their take on Modest Mouse’s “Float On” during the first set and new original “Underworld” as part of Friday’s second set.
AC Carter joined the host band on Friday for both “Overtime” and “Beneath The Surface” in the second set. The latter is a relatively new original debuted at last year’s Domefest. Carter added jazzy piano tones and urgent synth swells to the slow-burning rocker.

Friday’s third PPPP set was an “Under Cover” affair mixing a diverse array of covers and mashups. Drummer Alex Petropulos had a rare turn on lead vocals for Radiohead’s “The National Anthem,” while Carter’s TAUK Moore bandmates vocalist Kanika Moore and guitarist Kanika Moore contributed to a hard-hitting cover of the Led Zeppelin classic “Black Dog.” TAUK Moore also played a set of their own on Friday as did Barefuzz, Chalk Dinosaur and Gunk.
Twiddle returned to Domefest for the first time since 2014 on Saturday as part of a lineup that also included The Magic Beans, Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, The North 41, crypto WAVE radio and Houseplant. Pigeons unveiled the new original “Right Track,” brought up Twiddle keyboardist Ryan Dempsey for “Indiglo” and Twiddle drummer Adrian Tramontano for their first cover of Incubus’ “Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song)” within “F.U.” Additionally, The Magic Beans keyboardist Casey Russell augmented the quartet on “Henrietta.” Musicians from each group on the lineup capped the festival in various configurations with “The Domefest All-Stars” set.
