Yesterday, we shared a Spotify Playlist featuring the songs of Allen Toussaint and today we continue to celebrate his life just days after his untimely death at age 77. While yesterday’s focus was on audio recordings, today for Sunday Cinema we’re presenting a video that features Toussaint alongside fellow legendary New Orleans pianists Professor Longhair and Tuts Washington.

Released in 1982, the documentary Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together features the three late NOLA greats discussing their development as musicians and influence on a style of music they helped develop. The film includes rehearsal footage of the three pianists preparing for a concert that would have been the first time they shared a stage together. Sadly, Professor Longhair died unexpectedly days before the scheduled performance. The resulting tribute concert is among the featured scenes in the film.
