Phoebe Bridgers Rips Into Former Tennis Pro Margaret Court During Concert At Margaret Court Arena

Phoebe Bridgers is on tour in Australia where she performed on Wednesday night at Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena. During the concert, Bridgers led the audience in a chant of “fuck Margaret Court!” and further chastised the venue’s tennis-playing namesake.

The venue was named Margaret Court Arena in 2003 in recognition of Margaret Court, a former top-ranked professional tennis player from Australia. Court has stirred controversy after retiring from tennis for her outspoken criticism against same-sex marriage. Those comments drew the ire of Bridgers who called out Court during Wednesday’s performance.

As Stereogum noted, video footage captured by audience members at the concert at Margaret Court Arena shows Bridgers directing her anger at the former tennis star.

“So Margaret Court: fuck that stupid-ass, dumbass bitch,” Bridgers said. “Fuck that stupid cunt. Change your name!” She then counted down leading the audience in a chant of “fuck Margaret Court!” Bridgers then added:

“I think hate is undervalued. I think it’s a fucking weird, white supremacist idea that hate is bad or something? You know what I mean? It’s like hate is what moves things throughout history. I hate that stupid bitch! Hate is how you protect yourself. What, are you never supposed to be angry, ever? That’s insane.”
