Phish Tour 2022: Noblesville Night 3 – Setlist, Recap & The Skinny

The band kicked off the second set at Ruoff Music Center with a stellar 34-minute "Sand."

The week-and-a-half long first leg of Phish‘s Spring + Summer Tour 2022 opened on the Alabama sand, and it closed Sunday with a massive jam out of the song “Sand” in Indiana. The show — the band’s third in as many nights at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville — included many setlist curveballs, with several songs appearing in key locations in which they’d never or only infrequently appeared. But the show will go down in history for one thing and one thing only: the “Sand,” which marked the longest jam of the tour, and without question one of its best.

The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” had closed 14 Phish shows, but had never opened one until Sunday night. Though Trey Anastasio fit some stinging guitar licks into the song, he had some more left in him, so the band launched into Clifton Chenier’s “My Soul.” The evening’s first original, “Rift,” included a few hiccups, but was still high in energy. After a run through “Horn,” the band took “Wombat” for a bit of a walk, with Trey and Page McConnell spitting some blues-rock fire over Mike Gordon‘s distorted bass runs and Jon Fishman‘s syncopated funk beat.

The next pair of songs alternated between Trey’s more pensive songwriting, with “Evolve,” and his more technically complex side with “Guyute.” The set’s final section consisted of a solid “Limb By Limb,” a slightly extended “Mercury” and a rare set-closing “Moma Dance” which had a bit of extra wind in its sails.

More Skinny

While the first set included some interesting setlist choices, it was almost completely lacking in extended improvisation. The second set righted that wrong immediately.

Some of the elite jams in Phish history are great because they do one or two things incredibly well — funkfests, bliss jams, etc. Others, like Sunday night’s “Sand,” build entire worlds around themselves, unfolding like a novel with a beginning, middle and end, and numerous ups and downs along the way. This jam covered light and dark; outrageous peaks and jagged grooves; as well as terrain that defies any description, other than one: it’s pure, essential Phish.

The ensuing “Sigma Oasis” included a brief psychedelic jam before shifting back into the conclusion of “Sand.” The set continued with textbook versions of “Twenty Years Later,” “The Mango Song” and “Rise/Come Together.” Making its first appearance as a second set closer since September 17, 2000, “Free” featured a quick space-disco breakdown before returning to the closing refrain.

The band stepped up to their a cappella mics for a rendition of “Grind” to begin the encore. The evening and tour concluded with a patient, powerful take on “Slave To The Traffic Light.”

The second leg of Phish’s Spring + Summer Tour 2022 begins July 14 in Mansfield, Massachusetts.
