Phish Drops ‘Live Bait Vol. 23’ Featuring Louisville ‘93 ‘Tweezer’ & More

On the heels of Phish's late-summer tour date announcement earlier this month comes a bonus Live Bait archival audio compilation. Live Bait Vol. 23 was released today for free via LivePhish.com, featuring four tracks recorded live in or near the cities the band will play this September.

Each track was picked specifically for the collection by Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro. Just as with Live Bait Vol. 22, Shapiro put the focus on the ’90s. The latest installment spans 1993 through 1999.

The new set begins with a nearly 20-minute “Tweezer” from Phish’s August 15, 1993 concert at Louisville’s Macauley Theatre to represent the band’s upcoming performance at the Bourbon & Beyond festival. Shapiro then unearthed a wild “You Enjoy Myself” performed by the quartet on October 15, 1994 at Oak Mountain near Birmingham, the Alabama city where Phish will make their Coca-Cola Amphitheater debut with a two-night stand on September 13 and 14. A rare “Catapult” is sandwiched within the standout version of “YEM.”

Live Bait Vol. 23 nods to the band’s September 16 and 17 run near Atlanta at Ameris Bank Amphitheater with the two songs Phish used to kick off the third and final night of a November 1995 visit to the Fox Theatre: “Tweezer Reprise” and “Divided Sky.” The former marked only the second time the foursome opened with “Tweezer Reprise.”

An outstanding “Sand” recorded at the famed Hampton Coliseum on December 18, 1999 punctuates the new Live Bait. Phish will return to “The Mothership” for the first time in seven years on September 19 – 21. The Hampton ’99 “Sand” encapsulates the egalitarian “millennium sound” the band honed during 1999 as they built up to their legendary Big Cypress concerts.
