Watch ‘New Cut’ Of Phish’s Complete Gamehendge Production At Madison Square Garden

Phish unveiled official footage of their otherworldly Gamehendge performance pulled off on New Year’s Eve 2023 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The +two-hour video contains the full Gamehendge complete with Broadway-scale production as well as the “Harpua” that led into the tale and the “Split Open And Melt” which ended the spectacle.

Gamehendge has its roots in Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio‘s 1988 Goddard College thesis The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday. The quartet previously played five Gamehendge performances between 1988 and 1994. Phish enlisted actress Annie Golden to portray “Grandma” on New Year’s Eve with Mitchell Sink portraying “Jimmy.”

After opening the second set with “Down With Disease,” Phish used “Harpua” as the launching pad for their first Gamehendge performance in nearly 30 years. The tale started during the instrumental “The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday.” Dancers, actors, backing singers and acrobats took the stage as the quartet played such Gamehendge classics as “The Lizards,” “Punch You In The Eye,” “AC/DC Bag,” “Tela,” “Llama,” “The Sloth” and “Divided Sky” to close the second set on New Year’s Eve.

Phish picked up where they left off following the intermission with “McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters” kicking off the third set on December 31, 2023. Next came the pairing of “Colonel Forbin’s Ascent” and “Fly Famous Mockingbird” along with the traditional “Auld Lang Syne” to ring in 2024. More lizards took the stage as Phish performed the beloved “Split Open & Melt.”
