The Disco Biscuits guitarist Jon “Barber” Gutwillig discusses Phish on the latest episode of Osiris Media’s Helping Friendly Podcast. Gutwillig is also host of the Osiris podcast Touchdowns All Day.

The episode began with HFPod hosts RJ Bee, Jonathan Hart and Matt Dwyer talking to Gutwillig about his early experiences as a musician starting with getting a saxophone as his first instrument. Barber recalls switching to guitar as a teen and attending his first Phish show. They discuss Gutwillig’s experience seeing Phish play at Arrowhead Ranch in 1991 and how a friend’s mom foiled plans to attend Amy’s Farm. The guitarist also reveals that he forced himself to stop listening to Phish many years ago after playing a Bisco live tape and hearing a guitar lick that sounded too close to Trey Anastasio.

The episode then takes on a similar format to Touchdowns, but instead of analyzing the Disco Biscuits’ improvisations, Barber dissects Phish jams including parts of “Ghost” from November 17, 1997 and “AC/DC Bag” from September 14, 1999. They then breakdown part of a Bisco jam from 1999.

Camp Bisco, being forced to cancel touring because of COVID-19 and other topics are also touched on. Listen to the episode below:
