An updated “40th Anniversary Edition” of the Phish book 100 Things Phish Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die will be released on July 30 via Triumph Books. The tome, originally issued in 2018, has been revised with over 10,000 words covering the period from 2018 through 2024 by co-authors and former JamBase contributors Andy P. Smith and Jason Gershuny.
100 Things Phish Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die‘s forthcoming 40th Anniversary Edition also features over a dozen new photos including shots of the band’s Sci-Fi Soldier and Kasvot Växt Halloween concerts in Las Vegas. The book’s cover has also been updated with an image captured by photographer Scott Harris at Phish's Gamehendge New Year's Eve show held on December 31, 2023 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Relix Editor in Chief Mike Greenhaus wrote a new, heartfelt forward. Phish.net’s Scott Marks and Brian Harding of PHILM also contributed to the updated book. Smith and Gershuny penned thoughts about such topics as Phish’s April run at Sphere in Las Vegas, the Gamehendge concert, the band members’ various pandemic projects and more for the 40th Anniversary Edition of 100 Things Phish Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die.
“Beginning 2024 at the stroke of midnight with a full Gamehendge set, then Sphere, and a new album, and the tour, and the first festival in eight years. This year is pretty beefy,” Smith told JamBase. “If we jump cut 10 years down the road, like, how is 2024 gonna be remembered, or stand out among the 40-plus years of this band? To me it feels kind of momentous, but maybe that’s just being in the moment.”
“Gamehendge, with the size and scope and mythology, what that meant to the fanbase, for that to be the starting point of this year—and for it to be done in that way, with the theatrics, and just really giving it their all for the first time in 30 years… it really was an emotional, heartfelt moment,” added Gershuny. “And they just followed up: Mexico was great as always, and then to have the Sphere on top of that and the festival coming up. And then who knows what’s gonna be happening the rest of the year. This will be one of those years that people talk about. And it makes sense because we’re coming off their 40th anniversary. This is the launch to 40 and beyond.”

The updated version of the original book now covers the first 40 years of the Vermont-based quartet’s career. The tome’s 100 chapters include “Four (or Five or Six) Dudes in Vermont,” “Welcome to Gamehendge,” “Big Cypress: NYE 1999,” “Phish and the Internet,” “Phish Destroys America and Island Tour,” “Stroll Shakedown,” “Choose a Side: Mike Side, Page Side,” “Sigma Oasis” and over 90 additional “things.”
The updated 100 Things Phish Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die is available for pre-order now. Smith and Gershuny will promote the tome at events to be held on July 24 in Uncasville, Connecticut; July 30 in Portland, Oregon; August 2 in Brooklyn and August 17 at the Mondegreen festival.
